We surveyed 5 bike owners and asked them which bike lock they preferred. Here’s what we learned:
Kryptonite Gorgon and OnGuard Akita
The Kryptonite Gorgon and Akita locks are made of woven steel cables weighing approximately 2.5 and 2.3 pounds respectively. Both have a free anti-theft warranty.
In spite of their rough looks, both the Akita and the Gorgon could be broken with bolt cutters and a hacksaw. Hence, the locks mentioned above have zero theft protection. Even though they presented some of the thickest cable locks in the market, they definitely did not stand a chance. One of the users reviewed “Cable locks are the most definite way for your bike to get stolen”. It’s better to spend $40 on another lock.

This lock is of 13mm thickness and weighs just 2.2 pounds. Coming with a free anti-theft warranty The Force 3 costs $29.99. In terms of portability, The Force 3 is perfect as it is built to last long. When it comes to security nothing much can be assured about this lock. Of all the locks mentioned in this post, the Force 3 was the worst. The metal used in the shackle is of extreme low quality and the locking mechanism can be broken easily.

The OnGuard Beast does live up to its name. Weighing a mighty 10 pounds it can withstand harsh blows. Unlike the light weight locks mentioned above, the OnGuard Beast was barely affected by the hacksaw and bolt cutters. It was only with a hammer that the Beast was dented. The Beast was extremely difficult to open without a screwdriver. The only way to carry the Beast is to wear it on your shoulders or as a belt. Both ways it was uncomfortable. A small shackle comes with the padlock and it was absolutely free. The design definitely makes the lock sturdy, but it also makes it tough to control. With 12mm thickness and a free anti-theft warranty, the Beast comes for $89.99.

The Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit U-lock is one such lock thieves would choose to skip. Available for a whopping $89.95 with a 18mm thickness, it took 40 minutes to cut through the 18mm thick shackle. This makes it perfectly secure. It is made of the hardest steel that it can even substitute a dumbbell. Apart from its hefty weight it is actually pretty small in size which makes it simple to carry. The only disadvantage, well not really, is that you can only lock the bike frame to a particular object. Apart from that it’s definitely pricey but the Kryptonite lives up to its name and how.
